WASHINGTON – Iran has submitted a new proposal to the United States to end its two-month war, local media reported on Friday, as oil trade in the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s main sea route in the Persian Gulf, remains blocked.
The new proposal comes as U.S. President Donald Trump claims Iran is eager for a deal to end the war as its economy struggles after Washington unleashed economic fury against Tehran.
There are no details yet on Iran’s new proposal.
Tehran had previously offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, but wanted to postpone talks on its nuclear program until later.
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” Axios said Trump rejected the proposal and asked negotiators to put the nuclear issue back into the draft text.
According to Axios, one of the amendments includes a requirement for Iran to commit that it will not attempt to remove any enriched uranium from its bombed nuclear facilities or restart any activities at those sites as long as negotiations continue.
“President Trump has made clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon and negotiations will continue to ensure the short- and long-term national security of the United States,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told Fox News Digital on Friday.
Kelly’s comments came in response to the White House being asked about reports that Iran has presented Pakistan with an updated negotiating plan to end its conflict with the United States.
“We will not elaborate on private diplomatic conversations,” Kelly added.
Shortly after the United States and Israel launched war against Iran on February 28, Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has banned shipping to and from Iran through the strait since the ceasefire was announced on April 8.
Oil prices climbed to wartime highs of $114.70 a barrel on Thursday before falling back to $107 before settling at $110.40 a barrel.
Finance Minister Scott Bessant said: “The Iranian currency has fallen to an all-time low amid economic outrage. The Iranian people deserve a new era that the corrupt and chaotic Iranian regime cannot deliver.”
With the oil industry shutting down and the currency plunging, it’s long past time for the Iranian regime to admit that the Iranian people deserve better than what the ashes of the current regime can offer, he said.
“It’s hard for a rat in a sewer to know what’s going on in the outside world,” Bessant said.
He claimed that the United States has full control of the Strait of Hormuz; Iran has a shortage of hard currency, that is, U.S. dollars.
Bessant claimed that Iran has implemented food and gasoline rationing and that the entire international community is against Tehran.
“The blockade will continue until freedom of navigation is achieved by February 27,” the U.S. Treasury Secretary said.
