Comments Off on US-Iraq war: Donald Trump tells Congress hostilities ‘end’, bypassing war powers deadline during ceasefire

美伊战争:唐纳德·特朗普告诉国会敌对行动“终止”,在停火期间绕过战争权力最后期限The assertion came on Friday ahead of a May 1 deadline set by the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which requires Congress to approve continued military action.“The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026 have ended,” Trump wrote to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley. However, he also warned that “the threat posed by Iran … remains significant,” suggesting the conflict may not be completely over yet.The move effectively sidesteps the legal requirement for authorization, with the government arguing that the 60-day period does not apply due to the ceasefire that began in early April.War Secretary Pete Hegseth said the U.S. is “currently in a ceasefire,” which means “the 60-day clock is paused or stopped,” according to the Associated Press.

Republicans split, Democrats fight back

While most Republicans have avoided challenging Trump, some have expressed unease. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he does not currently believe in a vote on authorizing force, while others said Congress should eventually step in.Senator Susan Collins said the deadline was “not a suggestion but a requirement” and called for a clear strategy to end the conflict. Sen. Todd Young of Indiana added that lawmakers “must make sure the people…are involved” if hostilities resume.Democrats strongly rejected the administration’s explanation. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said, “There is no pause button in the Constitution…Lockdowns alone are an ongoing act of war.”The debate touches on broader concerns about the president’s war powers, with Trump launching his campaign against Iran two months ago without congressional approval. Critics say the ongoing naval blockade and Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz indicate active hostilities.House Armed Services Committee Democrat Adam Smith said he did not expect the administration to comply with the law, underscoring growing tensions between parties.
