Mediator Pakistan said the United States and Iran had agreed to a peace deal and an “immediate and permanent” end to military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, in the strongest sign that more than three months of war in the Middle East is coming to an end.

Pakistani Prime Minister Sherbaz Sharif posted on X that the peace agreement “has been reached” and the official signing ceremony will be held in Switzerland on June 19.

“The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” US President Donald Trump confirmed in a quick statement as he celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday.

“I hereby fully authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and authorize the immediate lifting of the U.S. Navy blockade. Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

Iran did not immediately confirm the news, which came just hours after it vowed to retaliate against an Israeli attack on Iranian ally Hezbollah in a Beirut suburb that threatened to delay the deal.

It declined on Sunday to provide a clear timetable for a peace deal.

But later in the day, Pakistan’s Sharif announced that a deal had been reached, thanking the United States and Iran for “finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict.”

“Both sides have announced an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” Sharif wrote. He also thanked the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye for their support of mediation efforts.

Sunday was a rollercoaster, with Trump angrily blaming Israel in the morning for delaying the signing of the deal due to airstrikes on Beirut that he said had delayed the signing of the deal.

The last time Israel attacked Beirut’s suburbs, triggering one of the strongest shocks so far in a ceasefire that has been largely maintained since April, Iran fired retaliatory missiles and Israel responded with strikes.

Tehran has long demanded that any deal to stop the war must include the parallel conflict in Lebanon, where Israel has been conducting operations against Iran-backed Hezbollah.

The war began in late February with the United States and Israel launching attacks on Iran and Iran retaliating against Israel and U.S. allies in the region and all but blocking ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global oil and gas supplies. The United States retaliated by blocking ship traffic to Iranian ports.
