UK cracks down on fake asylum claims, Home Secretary warns of deportations and action against 'fake lawyers'
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood

The UK government has signaled a tougher stance on asylum fraud, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood warning on X (formerly Twitter) that individuals who make false claims based on gender or sexual orientation will face rejection, deportation and loss of support.Mahmoud said in the post that the behavior of those abusing the protections afforded to people fleeing persecution was “beyond contempt.” She added that anyone who attempts to cheat the system to enter or remain in the UK will have their asylum application refused, have their support cut off and be given a “one-way flight out of the UK”.She also warned that “fake lawyers” who facilitate such cases would “face the full wrath of the law,” adding that those convicted would be jailed, their assets confiscated and the proceeds reinvested to fight the same crimes. Her comments came after a BBC investigation found that some legal advisers and law firms were charging migrants thousands of pounds to help them falsely claim to be gay to win asylum. The report suggests that this practice is being systematically exploited.Investigations revealed that many of those involved were students, individuals with expired work or tourist visas, rather than people arriving through informal means. The Home Office said it was investigating those named in the BBC report as part of a wider investigation after officials observed an increase in suspected fraudulent claims related to sexual orientation. The move reflects increasing scrutiny of asylum claims, particularly where protections designed for vulnerable groups are thought to have been abused.
