UK attacks Israeli defense company: Four Action for Palestine activists jailed after court finds 'terrorist links'

Four members of pro-Palestinian campaign group Action Palestine have been handed lengthy prison sentences for their role in a 2024 raid on an Elbit Systems UK factory near Bristol that caused more than 1.2 million pounds (more than $1.5 million) in damage. In a landmark ruling, the court found the offenses were “terrorism-related”, believed to be the first time criminal damage convictions have been treated in this way in the UK, resulting in harsher penalties for defendants, the BBC reported.

Judge cites ideological motivations, government influence

Delivering the sentence at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, Judge Jeremy Johnson ruled the campaigners’ actions were aimed at influencing the UK government and advancing political causes.“The purpose of this action was to influence the government and intimidate sections of the public,” the judge said, adding that it constituted an aggravating factor under terrorism sentencing provisions. The activists – Charlotte Head (30), Samuel Corner (23), Leona Kamio (30) and Fatema Rajwani (21) – broke into the Elbit Systems factory in August 2024 wearing red overalls. Prosecutors said they damaged drones, computers and other equipment while live-streaming parts of the operation on social media.

Activist who harmed police gets longest jail sentence

Corner received the maximum penalty – seven years and eight months in prison – for causing grievous bodily harm to police officer Kate Evans. The court heard Corner hit Evans with a sledgehammer during the raid, fracturing her spine. Judge Johnson said the attack involved “extreme and unprovoked force” and rejected arguments that Corner’s autism explained his actions.Hyder and Kamio were sentenced to five years in prison each, while Rajwani was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison. All four will remain on license supervision for one year after their release.

Police officer recounts lasting trauma

In an emotional victim impact statement, Sgt Evans told the court she continued to receive treatment but suffered from restless sleep and distressing dreams.“The emotional impact of this incident has been profound and lasting,” she said, adding that she had received abusive messages accusing her of supporting the “Zionist occupation of Britain”.Avon and Somerset Police Chief Constable Sarah Crewe said the attack had changed the officer’s life forever.“It’s important that everyone realizes that behind every uniform there is a regular person with a family and responsibilities,” Crewe said.

Supporters denounced ruling as an attack on the right to protest

The verdicts drew sharp criticism from activists and politicians sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.Green Party leader Zach Polanski called the ruling “distressing” and warned it was a “dangerous attack on the right to protest.”Labor MP John McDonnell called the sentences “truly shocking”.Defense barrister Rajiv Menon KC argued that the application of terrorism-related sentencing enhancements to criminal damage convictions was unprecedented and had the potential to have a chilling effect on legitimate protest.

Mass arrests outside court

About 500 demonstrators gathered outside the court to support the defendants. According to the Metropolitan Police, 107 people were arrested during the protests.Dispersal orders were issued after the sentencing, but hundreds of protesters remained, some of whom tried to block a prison van believed to be carrying the convicted activists. Police eventually cleared the road and the vehicle left later that night.

Ban on Palestinian movement faces legal test

The ruling comes as the British government continues its legal battle over the future of the operation in Palestine. The direct action group was banned under the Terrorism Act after a series of high-profile actions, including an attack on a Bristol factory. Membership or support of the organization constitutes a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison. However, the High Court ruled earlier this year that the ban was disproportionate and had a significant impact on human rights. The government is appealing the decision and a verdict is expected on Monday. The outcome could have significant implications for Britain’s protest movement and the government’s use of counter-terrorism powers.
