New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday outlined a slew of major political and governance commitments in West Bengal, including implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), ban on triple talaq and end to Polygamy If the BJP comes to power in the state by polls.Addressing a rally in Ranaghat, Shah said: “The BJP, if elected, will implement a uniform civil code in Bengal, end polygamy and impose a ban on triple talaq.”He said the BJP government would take a series of legal and administrative measures once it comes to power in the state. The BJP leader also promised direct financial support and benefits to women and youth, saying the party would provide monthly assistance after forming the government.“The PPP government will be formed on May 4. After May, the PPP government will deposit Rs 3,000 per month into the account of every sister and mother in Bengal and Rs 3,000 per month into the bank account of all unemployed youth. All mothers and sisters will not have to buy any bus tickets and they will travel for free,” Shah said.Shah also linked governance changes to law enforcement measures, claiming that cattle smuggling networks were active in parts of the state, especially Nadia district, and pledging to crack down if the BJP came to power.“After forming the government in West Bengal, we will form a special team to stop cattle smuggling,” Shah said.At another public meeting in Nadia, Shah highlighted the BJP’s national security record.Shah said, “Brothers and sisters, when I come to Nadia, I first want to pay my heartfelt tributes to martyr Juntu Ali Sheikh. He sacrificed his life for the country in an encounter with Pakistan on April 22 and later Operation Sindoor was carried out by the Prime Minister.”He further attacked the previous government, claiming a softer approach to terrorism and contrasting it with the BJP’s record in power.“Brothers and sisters, when Mamata and Congress were in power, terrorists got biryani. In 2014, Narendra Modi came to power. When there was attack in Uri, we conducted surgical strikes. After Pulwama attack, air strikes were conducted. After Pahalgam attack, we entered Pakistan and eliminated terrorists,” he said.Shah claimed that the current government has taken a tough stance against terrorism and extremism.“Prime Minister Modi has liberated the country from Naxalism and now brings the BJP government to power – we will carefully select and expel the infiltrators one by one,” he said, adding that if the party comes to power in Bengal, illegal infiltrators will be identified and weeded out.He also accused the opposition of protecting illegal immigration networks and reiterated that tough action would be taken after the election.Shah also claimed that the PPP had achieved electoral victory in the early stages of polling and urged voters to participate freely in the remaining stages.“If the BJP comes to power in West Bengal, ‘goonda raj’ and ‘syndicate raj’ will end,” he said. The home minister added that if elected, the party would ensure greater law and order and greater administrative transparency.Voting in the first phase of the assembly elections concluded at 6 pm on Thursday with a significant increase in voter turnout at 91.78 per cent in West Bengal, according to the Election Commission. The second phase of voting will be held on April 29, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
