The shooting occurred outside the main ballroom. The Secret Service said its officers acted quickly to control the situation and secure the site.
Trump was immediately evacuated and it was later confirmed that he was “uninjured.” First lady Melania Trump, Vice President Vance and other Cabinet members were also escorted to safety.
Those in attendance included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both of whom were evacuated as security teams secured control of the area.
Trump: ‘Charges brought against security checkpoints’
Trump said he had spoken with security officials who were injured in the incident.
“A man stormed a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons and he was knocked down by some very brave Secret Service members… One officer was shot but was saved… the vest did the trick. I just spoke to the officer and he did a great job,” he said.
What Trump had to say about the shooting
Trump recalled what was going through his head when the shots rang out. The US president said he initially thought it was a dropped pallet. The noise was “very far away,” he said, adding that Melania was “very aware” it was a shooting.
“I think she knew right away what was going on,” Trump recalled, saying his wife told him, “That sound was bad.”

The president said the shooter’s motive was unclear but said “he was a man who looked evil when he was down.”
