Who qualifies for a Trump account?

Each child born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 is eligible for a $1,000 donation, funded by Ministry of Finance Will invest in low-cost index funds to promote long-term growth from the date of account inception.

Children under 18 years of age may open an account. However, the account will be registered in the child’s name, with the parent acting as guardian until the child reaches 18 years of age. Annual contributions from family members or others are limited to $5,000, but these contributions are optional.

Once you reach age 18, the account functions similarly to an IRA. Withdrawals before age 59 ½ will incur a 10% early withdrawal penalty unless used for approved purposes such as education or buying a first home.

Both taxable and tax-exempt amounts can be included in the distribution. The initial seed money and business match are taxable, while parents’ after-tax contributions can be withdrawn tax-free, and any earnings will be fully taxed when withdrawn.

How do Trump accounts work and what benefits do they offer?

Investment options will be limited to low-cost domestic ETFs or mutual funds, Trumpaccounts.gov said, and funds will be allocated in a diversified portfolio of low-cost index funds designed to maximize long-term growth while minimizing risk.

Additional contributions can be made by friends, family members or employers, and certain contributions such as government seed money and contributions to qualified nonprofits are not included in the $5,000 annual limit, according to guidance from the Treasury Department.

During the year before the child’s 18th birthday, the account is still in the growth phase, and allowed actions during this period include transfers between trustees, rollovers to a 529A account, refunds of excess contributions, or distributions upon the child’s death.

Once you turn 18, the account enters a more flexible phase and operates similarly to a traditional IRA, with pre-tax contributions and earnings subject to tax on withdrawals, and early distributions are subject to a 10% penalty unless used for educational purposes or a home purchase.

After-tax contributions can be withdrawn with no tax consequences, but distributions must be pro-rated, and Roth conversions are allowed after age 18, allowing for potential future tax-free growth based on personal circumstances and account strategy.

Experts advise families to seek the advice of a tax or investment professional before donating, stay informed of any updated guidance from the Treasury Department on fees or investment options, and submit applications promptly to ensure eligibility for the $1,000 government contribution.
