News of the shooting prompted reactions from locals, with one expressing regret over the security situation. They shared an “I voted for this” photo, taking a stance against gun violence. Stores around the mall, such as DSW, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Nordstrom Rack, did not see a drop in customers, despite a decrease in traffic at the mall. A professor at the University of North Carolina at Kenan-Flagler weighed in on the matter, explain “I hope it’s either more of a hybrid open-air retail center or converted to mixed use.”
The mall also suffered a series of safety incidents, leading to tenants evacuating.
