Virginia woman Tracy J. Renshaw filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against Outback Steakhouse. She claimed she suffered serious and lasting injuries after slipping on mashed potatoes at a Stirling restaurant. The case was originally filed in Loudoun County Circuit Court and has been transferred to federal court.
Plaintiff Tracy J. Renshaw claimed the restaurant failed to maintain a safe place and failed to warn customers of hazardous conditions, according to court documents.
Outback SteakhouseThe company, meanwhile, has denied most of her claims and argued that it had no duty to warn customers of situations that were open and obvious for ordinary care.
1. Tracy Renshaw was involved in an accident in 2023. According to Renshaw’s lawsuit filed in Loudoun County, the accident occurred on May 14, 2023, at the Outback Steakhouse in Sterling, Virginia.
Renshaw said she was dining with her family when she stood up from the table and walked to the bathroom.
When she went to the bathroom, “she stepped on a slippery foreign object that looked like mashed potatoes.” Renshaw said she allegedly stepped on what appeared to be mashed potatoes on the floor and fell forward.
2. Renshaw said the restaurant floor was unclean. While it’s unclear how long the potatoes had been there before she slipped and fell, reports say Renshaw blamed the restaurant for failing to clean the floor in a timely manner.
She claimed in the lawsuit that unclean floors led to a “dangerous situation.”
3. Renshaw suffered serious and permanent injuries. The lawsuit alleges that the substance on the floor created what Renshaw called an “unreasonably dangerous condition” for patrons.
The injuries she sustained were “severe and permanent,” according to the complaint, although specific medical details were not publicly outlined in the report.
4. Renshaw filed suit in 2025. In 2025, two years after the incident, Renshaw filed a civil lawsuit in Loudoun County Circuit Court.
In 2026, the company requested that the case be transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria Division.
5. Renshaw is seeking $1.5 million in damages. Renshaw argued that the restaurant failed to properly address or warn customers of the alleged danger.
She said there were no banners or signs posted to warn people that the floors were unclean.
The $1.5 million lawsuit seeks compensation for Renshaw’s alleged injuries, medical bills and inability to work.
