Candidates backed by Donald Trump scored major victories in six state primaries on Tuesday. The biggest upset occurred in Kentucky, where Rep. Thomas Massie lost a costly Republican House primary to Trump-backed Ed Gallrein. Rep. Andy Barr also secured the Republican nomination for Kentucky’s vacant Senate seat.
Democrats had a relatively smooth night. In Georgia, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is expected to win the Democratic nomination for governor. On the Republican side, Burt Jones and Rick Jackson are both expected to advance to runoffs, as neither seems likely to break the 50% threshold.
In Pennsylvania, the gubernatorial race is official: Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro will face Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity in November. Both advanced uncontested.
Alabama’s crowded Senate race appeared to be heading into a runoff, with no clear Republican winner by early evening.
There was little drama in Oregon and Idaho, where incumbents from both parties sailed through their primaries.
Some results were still being tallied late Tuesday and some games could be moved to June’s finals.
