New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi Praise was poured out on Wednesday for Deepak Kumar, a native of Kodwar who called himself “Mohammed Deepak” while confronting a group of Bajrang Dal members to protect a Muslim shopkeeper. In a social media post on X, Rahul said Deepak defended the tricolor and the Constitution by taking a stand against hatred.“Millions of Indians have the ideology of harmony and love in their hearts, but there is also fear in their hearts – Deepak showed the way for all with his courage,” Rahul said.“The truth is, those who try to spread hatred and terrorize society are cowards – never fear them. Deepak defended our tricolor and our Constitution. He stood up against hatred and defended the weak – there is no greater patriotism,” he added.Earlier, “Mohammed Deepak” met Congress leaders at his official residence in Delhi on Monday. After the meeting, Deepak said Rahul assured him that what he was doing was good and that he should not be afraid.“Rahul Gandhi called me here today. He spoke to my wife and family and assured me that what I am doing is good and I should not have any fear. He also said that he will travel to Kotwa and become a member of my gym,” Deepak said.“Today, things are better (in Kotwa) than before. Rahul ji also made me meet Sonia ji. I have nothing to do with politics. It’s good to know that someone understands that I have raised a voice for humanity,” he added. In January, Bajrang Dal activists staged a protest outside the ‘Baba’ clothing store on Patel Marg, demanding that the 70-year-old owner Vakil Ahmed change the name of the store. Clashes broke out between protesters after Deepak, a friend of Ahmed’s son, intervened, prompting police to take action. The situation was brought under control and the police later registered three separate FIRs in connection with the incidents.Tensions rose again after a video circulated by the Hindu Raksha Dal showed a man threatening to travel to Kotwala to “teach Deepak a lesson” on February 12.The local government has strengthened security precautions to prevent further escalation of the situation. Additional police commissioner Chandra Mohan Singh said no one should disturb the peace of the town and warned of strict action against those who try to incite riots.
