New Delhi: The debate on the future of representation in India took center stage during a special session of Parliament, with anticipation and uneasiness surrounding the massive delimitation exercise setting the tone for the Lok Sabha. Seeking to quell growing concerns in southern states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah assured the Lok Sabha that the proposed delimitation exercise would not cause injustice to the region. The assurance came despite strong protests by the DMK in Chennai, with demonstrators raising slogans and burning copies of the proposed bill.Speaking in the House of Representatives, Amit Shah dismissed concerns about the South losing representation as “completely false” and claimed the exercise would actually expand seats and influence. “The number of seats will increase and so will the powers,” he said.Shah outlined that the five southern states’ representation in the Lok Sabha will increase from the current 129 seats to 195, with the overall share rising slightly from 23.76 per cent to nearly 24 per cent.

Karnataka’s seats will increase from 28 to 42, Andhra Pradesh from 25 to 38, Telangana from 17 to 26, Tamil Nadu from 39 to 59 and Kerala from 20 to 30, he said.

The demarcated South: What the math shows

Karnataka

Karnataka currently has 28 Lok Sabha seats, accounting for 5.15% of the strength of the House. After the delimitation, the number of seats in the state is expected to increase to 42. But its overall share is expected to decline slightly to 5.14%.

andhra pradesh

Andhra Pradesh currently has 25 Lok Sabha seats, accounting for 4.60% of the lower house. After the proposed expansion, its seats may increase to 38, with its share rising slightly by about 0.05 percentage points.

Telangana

Telangana currently has 17 seats in the Lok Sabha. After delimitation, its seats are expected to increase to 26. Its share in the House of Representatives is expected to rise from 3.13% to 3.18%.

tamil nadu

Tamil Nadu is one of the largest contributors to the Lok Sabha, currently fielding 39 members and holding 7.18% share. After delimitation, its number of seats may increase significantly to 59, and its share will rise slightly to 7.23%.

kerala

Kerala currently elects 20 Lok Sabha members. After delimitation, this number is expected to increase to 30. However, its share in the House of Representatives is likely to remain almost unchanged, falling slightly from 3.68% to 3.67%.
