The ordinary felt-tip pen that saved Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin from being stranded on the moon in 1969 has sold at auction for $857,600
Buzz Aldrin repaired a broken switch and rocketed Apollo 11 from the moon back to Earth with just a felt-tip pen

A common felt-tip pen that helped save two astronauts stranded on the moon has sold at auction for $857,600.During the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969, Buzz Aldrin used a simple writing instrument to repair a damaged circuit breaker, allowing the lunar module to leave the moon and return safely to Earth. The brushed aluminum Duro Rocket fountain pen is the highlight of Sotheby’s 2026 Space Exploration auction, selling within the expected price range of $800,000 to $1.2 million. The pen was sold directly from the Buzz Aldrin Family Trust and remains one of the most famous cases of emergency problem solving in space history.

Broken switch on the moon

The story of this pen begins after a dangerous problem occurred inside the lunar module Eagle. After Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin completed their historic moonwalk, they returned to the lander and prepared to go. Just then, they discovered a serious problem.Inside the small spacecraft, an astronaut accidentally broke off the plastic tip of an engine arm circuit breaker switch. This switch is important because it activates the ascent engine, the only engine that can lift the Eagle’s upper section off the lunar surface.Without the switch, the engine will not start. This means that Armstrong and Aldrin may be left permanently on the moon, while command module pilot Michael Collins continues to orbit Columbia alone, unable to help them return.

The pen is a brushed aluminum Duro “Rocket” black felt tip pen, approximately 5.5 inches long.

Simple solutions in space

As time passed, Aldrin looked for a solution to the problem. He noticed that the broken switch had left a small opening where the plastic part was. If he could insert something small enough, he could press the internal metal contacts and activate the circuit.Metal objects such as screwdrivers or keys can cause short circuits and damage the spacecraft’s electrical systems.Aldrin then remembered his Duro Rocket Pen. The pen’s black plastic tip is non-conductive, making it safe to use. He placed the tip into the broken circuit breaker opening and pressed it down. The switch moves into place and the system is successfully activated. The repair was successful. On July 21, 1969, the ascent engine fired as planned, allowing Eagle to lift off from the moon and meet Collins in lunar orbit.

Gadgets that become historical artifacts

The pen is approximately 5.5 inches long and is a standard brushed aluminum writing instrument. It has a pocket clip on the lid labeled “Rocket” and a small Velcro strap to help astronauts secure it to the wall of the spacecraft in zero gravity.Sotheby’s is selling the pen along with the damaged engine arm circuit breaker switch button that caused the emergency. Both items come with a letter of authenticity signed by Aldrin confirming they were flown to and used on the moon. The auction also features other important space artifacts, including Aldrin’s personal Omega Speedmaster watch, Apollo mission equipment and rare engineering items from the U.S. and Soviet space programs.

The legacy of Apollo 11

NASA On July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 mission was launched using the powerful Saturn V rocket. The astronauts spent three days traveling to the moon, and then the lunar module landed in the Sea of Tranquility on July 20.After landing, Armstrong famously said to Earth: “The Eagle has landed.” He later became the first man to set foot on the moon and said: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”During the two-and-a-half-hour moonwalk, the astronauts collected 21.5 kilograms of lunar rocks, conducted scientific experiments on the lunar surface, and planted an American flag. After Aldrin’s quick fix returned the Eagle to orbit, the crew began the journey home. On July 24, 1969, they landed safely in the Pacific Ocean. After 21 days of quarantine to prevent possible lunar contamination, the astronauts returned to public life.

Rather than panic, Aldrin looked for solutions.

The cost of reaching the moon

Prior to the Apollo missions, NASA invested heavily in astronaut preparation, making the program one of the most expensive and demanding space projects in history. Between 1960 and 1973, the Apollo program cost approximately $25.8 billion, a figure estimated to be more than $250 billion in today’s money, adjusted for inflation. A significant portion of this budget is used to support astronaut training, spacecraft development, mission planning and testing.Astronauts undergo years of intense preparation before each mission. They received classroom instruction in spacecraft systems, orbital mechanics, navigation, geology and engineering. Because the Apollo astronauts needed to collect lunar rock samples, they trained as professional geologists and studied volcanic landscapes in places like Arizona, Hawaii, and Iceland, which have terrain similar to parts of the moon.Good health is another key requirement. Astronauts follow a strict exercise program and undergo regular physical examinations. They also trained in simulators, simulating every stage of the mission, including launch, moon landing, spacewalk and emergencies. Water survival exercises prepared them for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, while aircraft flights in low-gravity conditions helped them practice operating in near-weightlessness.This extensive preparation ensured that the Apollo astronauts were able to operate the complex spacecraft, respond to unexpected problems, and safely complete the first human mission to the moon.
