‘Terrorist act’: Man arrested after stabbing three people at Swiss train station
A knife-wielding man was arrested on Thursday after injuring three people at a train station in the Swiss city of Winterthur in what authorities described as a “terrorist act.”The attack occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time. Police said the suspect, a 31-year-old Swiss-Turkish dual national man living in Winterthur, was arrested within five minutes of emergency services receiving the alert.Regional police chief Marius Weyermann said the suspect came to the attention of authorities in 2015 for spreading propaganda linked to the Islamic State group.Wehrmann also said the man had recently been admitted to a psychiatric hospital after calling emergency services and making “confused comments” but was released on Wednesday after doctors determined he was not in danger.Three Swiss men aged 28, 43 and 52 were injured in the stabbing incident. Two of them have been released from the hospital or are expected to be released later in the day, and the third remains hospitalized after undergoing surgery for a thigh injury, authorities said.Investigators believe the suspect acted alone.Zurich regional security official Mario Fer described the incident as a “sinister act of terror.”Winterthur is located in northeastern Switzerland near Zurich and has a population of approximately 123,000 people.
