New Delhi: As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach, political activity in the state intensifies with major alliances consolidating and political parties recalibrating their strategies based on past performance and changing voter dynamics. The contest is expected to once again revolve around the DMK-led alliance and the AIADMK-led NDA front, although bjp is trying to expand its footprint.this Artificial Intelligence ADMK Seat-sharing with its key allies was finalized on Monday, allocating 27 seats to the Bharatiya Janata Party, 18 to its president Anbumani Ramadoss-led PMK faction and 11 to TTV Dhinakaran-led AMMK, ending talks among the opposition front’s key constituencies for the assembly elections. In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, Dravida Munnetra Kazagam (DMK) led a decisive victory, winning 159 of 234 seats, returning to power after a decade. The DMK itself won 133 seats with a vote share of about 36.8%. Its main ally, the Indian National Congress, won 18 seats and about 4.4% of the vote.On the other hand, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led alliance secured 75 seats, out of which the AIADMK won 66 seats and secured about 33.3 per cent vote share. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which contested as part of the AIADMK alliance, won 4 seats with about 2.6% of the vote share.Smaller players also played a role in shaping the outcome. Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) won 5 seats while Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), allied with DMK, won 4 seats. Left parties such as the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) won 2 seats each, contributing to the overall seat tally of the DMK-led bloc. The distribution of votes highlighted the polar contest, with the DMK-led alliance polling nearly 45 per cent overall and the AIADMK-led front getting around 39 per cent, indicating a relative consolidation of opposition votes against the then AIADMK government. As the state heads into the next election cycle, the coalition is once again on shaky ground. The DMK is expected to rely on welfare schemes and governance record to retain its core alliance with the Congress, Left parties and the VCK. Meanwhile, the AIADMK is grappling with internal challenges and alliance uncertainty, especially after changes in its relationship with the BJP.The BJP, despite its modest vote share, is trying to become a more influential player this time by contesting more seats, aiming to convert its incremental votes into seats. At stake in the upcoming elections is not only the power of one of India’s most politically unique states, but also the future trajectory of Dravidian politics, which has historically resisted national party dominance. While the DMK will seek to defend its mission, the AIADMK faces the challenge of rebuilding leadership coherence, while the BJP will test whether its expansion strategy can undermine Tamil Nadu’s entrenched political dualism.
