NEW DELHI: In Tamil Nadu’s tight-knit alliance politics, the verdict is often as much about change as it is about continuity. With the vote now complete and results set to be announced, attention turns to what the results mean for the balance of power within the coalition, particularly for indian national congress party. The victory of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led front was mainly interpreted as an endorsement of the ruling party leadership.chief minister Stalin Remaining a central figure in the state’s political battles, governance credit is expected to go largely to his party. For Congress, which remains the junior partner in the coalition, such an outcome would ensure representation and continuity, but not necessarily greater political ownership.

Tamil Nadu exit polls: One pollster gives Vijay’s TVK over 100 seats, others predict DMK comeback

The alliance with the DMK provided stability to the Congress in Tamil Nadu. It provides clear electoral space, governance opportunities and a role within the wider opposition framework. At the same time, it reinforces the structural hierarchy. Congress operates constrained by seat-sharing arrangements and the dominance of its allies, which limits its ability to expand independently. The party’s presence in Tamil Nadu remains stable but modest, and victories within the alliance are likely to maintain that balance rather than significantly alter it.

Can Vijay remove Congress from power?

The emergence of actor-turned-politician Vijay poses an important counterfactual to this election, as his appeal among young voters and his positioning outside traditional party structures add new variables to the state’s political landscape. While his electoral impact will become more pronounced over time, his inclusion already expands the scope of political possibilities. For the Congress, a potential alliance with Vijay could provide another avenue. The move could help the party reconnect with parts of the electorate that don’t fit neatly into the existing coalition structure. It may also provide an opportunity to negotiate a more balanced role rather than staying within the established framework dominated by the DMK.At the same time, this shift also brings risks. Existing alliances provide electoral certainty and organizational coordination that new partnerships may not be immediately replicable. Issues of vote shifting, leadership clarity and ideological coherence require careful consideration. In a state where voters have historically favored stable and well-defined coalitions, any reconfiguration will need to present a coherent and credible alternative. In this election, Congress ultimately chose continuity over experimentation. By remaining within the DMK-led alliance, it has chosen a familiar and relatively secure political arrangement. While the results await, the wider implications of this choice come into focus. If the alliance returns to power, Congress will continue to be part of the governance framework and benefit from its association with a successful alliance. However, its role is likely to remain secondary, with limited scope in shaping the state’s overall political narrative. Therefore, the question of long-term growth remains open. The Congress’s strategy in Tamil Nadu prioritizes stability and coalition cohesion but has yet to translate into a significant expansion of its independent base. Whether future election cycles prompt a re-evaluation of this approach, including the possibility of engaging with emerging political forces like Vijay, will be a key factor in determining its trajectory in the state. Now that voters have cast their votes, the focus is on the verdict. The outcome will determine not only the composition of the next government, but also whether existing political arrangements continue to hold or begin to evolve.
