Supreme Court: ‘Yadav Ji ki…’ did not defame community India News

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea seeking to ban or change the title of the upcoming film “Yadav Ji ki Love Story”, saying the title did not have a negative impact on the Yadav community.A bench comprising Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan dismissed the petition filed by Chief Vishwa Yadav Parishad. Its main grievance is that the title of the film reflects the bad image of the Yadav community in society.“We do not understand how the title of the film can reflect a negative image of the community. In the title… there is no adjective or any word that portrays a negative image of the Yadav community,” Justice Nagaratna said. The judge called the concerns “completely unfounded” and dismissed the petition. The bench distinguished its previous order in a similar case related to “Ghooskhor Pandat” in which it asked the producers to change the title of the film.“The word ‘ghooskhor’…means corruption. Therefore, a negative connotation has been assigned to this community. In the present case, no such negative connotation has been assigned to the Yadav community. No reasonable restriction under Article 19(2) of the Constitution (reasonable restrictions on freedom of speech and expression) has been attracted. The name in no way portrays the Yadav community in a bad light or in any negative manner.” Therefore, the writ petition is dismissed,” the order said. The petitioners claim the title creates an offensive stereotype of the community and raises concerns about the depiction of the heroine. During the hearing, the petitioners’ lawyers argued that while they were not opposed to interracial marriage, the film’s depiction of women was unacceptable.“A woman cannot be made public in this way,” the lawyer said, adding that the film claims to be based on a true story. However, the judges remained unconvinced, classifying the film as a work of fiction.
