The recent discovery of a stunning 158.20-carat yellow diamond at Canada’s Diavik Diamond Mine marks the end of the mine’s 20-year history and is one of five diamonds of this size. This unique discovery occurred in April 2026, shortly after the mine ended operations. As noted by the Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the mine, located approximately 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories (NT), plays an important role in northern Canada’s industrial economy, producing more than 150 million carats of diamonds since first production in 2003. This beautiful yellow diamond is a symbol of the success of the business, representing innovation in modern Arctic scientific design and modern partnership in natural resource management, and celebrating a transformative period in the world diamond industry.
According to the Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the 158.20-carat yellow stone is an extraordinary find for the Diavik mine, which produces mainly high-quality white diamonds. Yellow diamonds account for less than 1% of the mine’s total historical output. The recovery is the fifth time that more than 100 carats of yellow gemstones have been unearthed at the facility, highlighting the rare geology of the kimberlite pipes beneath Lake Grasse.
Since commencing commercial production in 2003, Diavik, operating as a joint venture, has become one of the most productive mining operations in North America, according to the Government of the Northwest Territories. By the time production ceases in April 2026, the mine has successfully mined more than 150 million carats of diamonds. Known for its engineering resilience in the subarctic region, the project utilizes complex water management dykes and an integrated wind-diesel power system.
Following the end of mining, the site is currently in a formal closure and reclamation phase, which is expected to last until at least 2029. This process is managed by a closure plan developed in consultation with local Aboriginal stakeholders and regulators to ensure the land is restored to a self-sustaining ecosystem.
