Recharging mobile numbers will become easier in India as WhatsApp launches a new feature that will allow users to recharge while chatting with friends and family. This new feature aims to consolidate important daily transactions, such as recharging mobile numbers and buying metro tickets, into one place. This is also an attempt to get more people to use its payment interface WhatsApp Pay, which competes with the likes of Google Pay and PhonePe in the country.
The Meta-owned messaging app has announced a partnership with fintech company PayU to launch a feature that will allow users to top up their mobile numbers without leaving the app. Mobile phone users can use this feature to recharge mobile numbers of major domestic telecom operators such as Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea, etc. This means that mobile phone users do not need to visit the telecom operator’s specific website or access their app to recharge their mobile number.
But there’s a caveat. As of now, this feature is only available for prepaid users. Postpaid users have to visit the telecom operator’s website or app to pay their monthly bill.
As far as availability is concerned, WhatsApp has started rolling out the feature to Android and iOS device users in India in a phased manner. Once this feature is available, you can access it in the Payments section of the app, which can be accessed through the rupee sign next to the camera icon in the Chat tab. The payment section also provides a ticket booking menu for metros across the country, including Delhi Metro, Mumbai Metro, and Namma Metro (Bengaluru), among others.
Here is the step-by-step guide to recharge your mobile number using WhatsApp:
Step one: Open WhatsApp and tap on the rupee icon in the upper right corner of the Chat tab.
Step 2: Select the Mobile Prepaid Recharge icon.
Step 3: Enter your mobile number or select the contact you want to top up.
Step 4: Choose a telecommunications service provider.
Step 5: Choose your preferred recharge plan.
Step 6: Choose your preferred payment method.
Step 7: Payment.
