Shooting at Louisiana Mall food court leaves 1 dead, 5 injured

At least one person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting Friday at the Food Court of the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, authorities said, according to the Associated Press.Police said the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between two groups and was not a random attack. Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse told The Associated Press that five people were in custody and there was no ongoing threat to the public.According to police, the incident took place around 1.30pm when an argument between two groups escalated into gunfire. Authorities initially said as many as 10 people were injured, but later revised the number to five. The shooting sent shoppers and employees scrambling for safety, according to police and witnesses. Desire Patton, who works at a clothing store, said she and her co-workers rushed into a break room. “We hid there until the police came and got us,” Barton said.Police are appealing to witnesses to share video of the shooting. By late afternoon, dozens of police cars remained at the scene, helicopters circled overhead and armed police patrols continued.Mall spokesperson Lindsay Kahn called it a “terrible day” and said the mall would remain closed for the remainder of the day.Witness Kennedy Barnum said she saw people running and crying after hearing about the shooting. “We should leave immediately,” she recalled a security guard telling her.
