Shortly after Gorman’s murder, Chicago police arrested Medina-Medina on charges including first-degree murder. Authorities used facial recognition software to compare images from surveillance footage to U.S. Customs and Border Protection records. CPD investigators said in the arrest report that the images matched Medina-Medina.

According to court records, a warrant was issued for Medina’s arrest in 2023 after Medina stopped appearing in court on a shoplifting charge. Federal officials say Medina, an undocumented Venezuelan citizen, should never have been released after being arrested in 2023.

Department of Homeland Security said in a statement Following the murder, “Sheridan Gorman was murdered by an illegal immigrant who should not be in our country. We are committed to seeking justice for the Gorman family and working every day to prevent preventable tragedies like this from happening again. Join us in praying for her family, friends and loved ones during this tragic time.”
