Qatar's wealthy emir Sheikh Tamim gifted Trump a luxury $400 million 747, then quietly rebuilt a $500 million superyacht for his next voyage

Few state-owned assets receive as much attention as a presidential plane, especially when it begins service in the fleets of foreign royal families. But while the debate in Washington centers on Qatar’s decision to show off one of its luxury Boeing 747-8 aircraft to the United States, another project involving the same royal family is unfolding thousands of miles away and attracting little attention. In northern Germany, the flagship superyacht of the Emir of Qatar spent several months in a specialist shipyard undergoing extensive refit before returning to the Mediterranean. At first glance, these two developments may seem unrelated. One became an international political story, the other stayed mostly in the realm of luxury shipbuilding.Together, though, they reveal the scale of the Al Thani family’s holdings and the vastly different purposes they served, from diplomacy and statecraft to private travel and long-term investments.

When the luxurious Boeing 747-8 was gifted to the United States

USA Today reports that U.S. President Donald Trump received a Boeing 747-8 as a gift, which was previously operated by Qatar’s ruling family in early 2025 and is known among aviation enthusiasts for its luxurious interiors rather than its political importance. The aircraft, reportedly built for Qatar’s Amiri flights and delivered in 2012, has living areas that resemble a luxury home more than a traditional aircraft, including private suites, a reception lounge and custom interiors created specifically for royal travel.Just a few months later, the plane entered a completely different chapter. Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani transferred the aircraft to the United States as a gift. According to “USA Today”, Donald Trump thanked the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for the donation, “I want to thank the Emir of Qatar. He is a great man.”Instead of joining a private collection or being sold on the open market, it became part of a plan to bolster the nation’s aging presidential fleet, while replacement aircraft still face lengthy delays.

How the Boeing 747-8 became the interim Air Force One program

Accepting aircraft from foreign governments was never likely to be routine. Military planners view the Boeing 747 as a possible interim solution, while work on the next-generation Air Force One aircraft remains behind schedule. Any aircraft carrying the President of the United States would require extensive communications systems, defense technology and security modifications that far exceed commercial aviation standards. Experts question whether these upgrades can be completed quickly without compromising safety. Some lawmakers believe accepting such a valuable gift raises constitutional issues, while others are concerned about the cost of modifying the aircraft. According to the US Public Broadcasting Company (PBS), US President Donald Trump recently unveiled the US’s new temporary Air Force One, a luxury Boeing 747 that previously belonged to Qatar and has been converted for the exclusive use of the president. The aircraft sports a redesigned navy blue, white and red exterior, replacing the light blue color scheme used since the Kennedy administration. It also features the presidential seal and a large American flag on its tail.Speaking at Andrews Air Force Base, Trump described the plane as a “flying White House” and said it would accompany him on upcoming international travel, including a NATO summit in Turkey. He also announced that the aircraft would take part in ceremonial flights during the National Day celebrations.Qatar jets are being used as makeshift or “bridge” aircraft, while the new VC-25B presidential plane ordered from Boeing continues to face delays. The aircraft were originally expected to be delivered in 2024, but are now planned for 2028.

Emile’s superyacht gets maximum maintenance period

As public discussion swirled around the plane, Sheikh Tamim’s attention seemed to be focused elsewhere. At the Lürssen shipyard in northern Germany, Emir’s superyacht Al Lusail entered dry dock to undergo the largest maintenance program since its commissioning. Unlike the political attention surrounding the aircraft, the work attracted little public attention despite involving one of the world’s largest private yachts.Refitting a boat of this size rarely involves cosmetic work alone. Engineers inspect propulsion systems, overhaul subsea equipment, rebuild generators, update onboard technology and complete mandatory classification work required for international certification. The interior spaces are frequently updated simultaneously, allowing the yacht to maintain the standards expected of a ship designed for long-term royal use.As the months passed, Al Lusail quietly left the shipyard and returned to the Mediterranean in time for the summer cruising season.

Six-deck megayacht designed for global exploration

The International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS) reports that the deck was delivered by German shipbuilder Lürssen in 2017 and that the Al Lusail is one of the largest private yachts ever built. It is 123 meters long and spans six decks, integrating the functions of a private residence, entertainment venue and long-distance ocean-going ship.Accommodation is arranged for dozens of guests, supported by a crew of over fifty. The yacht features wellness facilities, swimming pool, cinema, beauty salon, beach club, gym, helicopter landing area and ample garage space. The long-range fuel capacity enables major voyages without the need for frequent refueling stops, making crossings between continents fully feasible. Its interior design follows a form of understated luxury rather than showy display, with carefully selected stone, wood and handcrafted finishes used throughout the guest areas.

Al Lusail and the presidential plane will enter a new parallel phase in 2026

According to reports, the yacht is deliberately one meter shorter than the superyacht Katara commissioned by Sheikh Tamim’s father, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. After power passed peacefully from father to son in 2013, the slightly shorter length was widely interpreted as a sign of respect for the emir rather than an attempt to outdo earlier vessels. In a family with vast wealth, this decision shows that prestige is not always expressed by building something bigger. Sometimes it manifests itself in opposite choices. By June 2026, aircraft and yachts will reach a new stage almost simultaneously.
