Newsom said more than 10,000 homes in Simi Valley and surrounding areas have been evacuated.

Additionally, 3,500 homes are currently under evacuation warnings stretching into neighboring Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said officials did not expect the fire to spread to the city. However, the warning was issued “out of an abundance of caution.”

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The fire remained at zero containment as of early Tuesday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported.

Sandy Fire: National Weather Service meteorologist provides update

Humidity will be low, around 10 percent, and temperatures will be in the mid-80s, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Devin Black. Winds are expected to peak in the late morning, followed by a change in direction that will bring in more overland flow in the early afternoon.

Black said wind gusts could reach up to 25 to 30 mph in the valleys and up to 35 mph on the ridges. These gusts are expected to remain relatively consistent as the wind direction changes from northeast to southwest.

Officials lifted some evacuation warnings for the west side of Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks Monday night. However, all other evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect.

The fire broke out around 11 a.m. near Sandy Avenue in Ventura County, fueled by dry weather and strong winds.

Pilots sprayed water multiple times Monday near Bridle Path, an equestrian area in the county’s southwestern foothills, as the fire threatened nearby homes. Officials warned that the fire was spreading “dangerously quickly” by late morning.

Firefighters experienced brief relief during the evening when the wind shifted, bringing cooler, more humid ocean breezes.
