Samsung, Sony, LG, Xiaomi and TCL smart TVs explained: What each brand does best

Buying a smart TV these days is about more than choosing a screen size. Every brand approaches TV technology differently. Some brands focus on image processing, some push the boundaries of display technology, and some focus on delivering large screens at affordable prices.

A quick guide to what the biggest smart TV brands actually do best.

For the past seven years, I’ve tracked consumer technology through the constant changes in hardware, platforms, and the way people actually use their devices. Covering everything from budget gear to flagship hardware, I focus on what readers need to know, not buzzwords or release cycle hype. My expertise spans gaming laptops and gaming chairs, high-performance computers, gaming monitors, printers, smartwatches, headphones, headsets, Bluetooth speakers, tablets, and more, with a special focus on how these products perform in daily use. Reviews, explainers, buying guides, and news stories all have a common goal: to provide readers with enough detail to make a confident decision rather than wading through nonsense. Outside of deadlines, I spend a lot of time playing games, watching movies, and anime, which naturally flows into work. Performance, comfort, display quality and sound are judged on how players and viewers experience it, not just lab data, which grounds my coverage in real-life scenarios, not just benchmarks.

That’s why comparing smart TVs by specs alone can sometimes be confusing. Samsung, Sony, LG, Xiaomi, and TCL all dominate different markets, and each brand has its own advantages.

In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at how well-known these brands actually are when it comes to smart TVs. This article doesn’t focus on a single model, but rather explains what each company does best so you can quickly decide which brand is best for your home setup.

Quick comparison of smart TV brands

Samsung Smart TVs: Known for bright displays and rich features

Samsung has built its reputation around QLED and Neo QLED display technology. These TVs are designed to produce extremely bright images, which makes them perfect for living rooms that receive lots of natural light.

Another area where Samsung excels is gaming. Many of its latest TVs feature high refresh rates, low input lag and HDMI 2.1 support to work perfectly with modern gaming consoles.

LG Smart TV: Leader in OLED Technology

LG is one of the world’s largest OLED panel manufacturers. OLED technology allows each pixel to control its own brightness, resulting in incredibly deep blacks and excellent contrast. That’s why LG OLED TVs are often considered one of the best TVs for watching movies in dark environments.

LG’s webOS interface is another highlight. It’s fast, simple, and designed to make switching between apps effortless. The system also supports voice assistants and smart home connectivity.

Sony Smart TVs: Best for Color Processing and Gaming

Home theater enthusiasts often recommend Sony TVs for their powerful image processing capabilities. The company’s processors focus primarily on color accuracy, motion processing, and upscaling low-resolution content.

Owning a Sony TV is perfect for gamers as some of Sony’s top models come with the best compatibility features for PlayStation consoles.

Xiaomi Smart TV: powerful and affordable

Xiaomi has become very popular in the Indian TV market by offering large smart TVs at competitive prices. The brand focuses on delivering modern features without pushing the price too high.

Many Xiaomi TVs run Google TV as well as the company’s PatchWall interface, which consolidates content from multiple streaming services into a unified feed.

TCL Smart TV: Premium display technology, lower price

TCL has grown rapidly by introducing advanced display technologies such as Mini LED and QLED into more affordable TVs.

Mini LED technology enables TVs to control brightness in smaller areas compared to traditional LED displays, thereby improving contrast and reducing light leakage.

Most TCL TVs also run Google TV, which means users have access to the same app ecosystem found on many pay TVs.
