The Minnesota Vikings announced the death of former defensive back Roniel Whitaker. He is 46 years old.
Whittaker died on Sunday, February 22, his family confirmed the news, releasing a statement describing him as a “beloved son, brother and friend.” His death comes one day after the Vikings wide receiver Rondale Moore Suspected of self-harm and death gunshot wound exist Indiana 25 years old.
Roniel Whittaker’s death
Whitaker’s cause of death has not been revealed by the Vikings or his family. His family said only that they were “saddened to share the passing of Whitaker,” who “lived a life filled with passion, perseverance and purpose,” according to the Vikings.
“He was a talented athlete who played high school football at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia, and in college for the Virginia Tech Hokies, and his talent, determination and leadership on the field made a lasting impact,” the family statement said.

“Ronier went on to pursue his professional dreams in the National Football League, signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2003. During his career, he also played for the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, and he later continued his football journey with the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers before retiring from professional football in 2010,” the family further said, adding that he was also “a defensive back” with Chanhassen from 2014-18. High School Coach and serves as CEO/Owner of the privately held Whitaker Group, LLC, specializing in relocation transactions and short sales since 2011. “
They added: “While many knew him for his athletic achievements, those closest to him knew him best for his generous heart, unwavering loyalty and deep love for his family. He was a protector, mentor, strength and source of laughter to all who were lucky enough to know him. We ask for prayers, love and privacy during this extremely difficult time as our family grieves this great loss and celebrates the life of a man who meant so much to so many.”
The family added that details about funeral arrangements and memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Rondale Moore dies
Moore died hours before Whitaker’s death. On the evening of Saturday, February 21, police in Moore’s hometown of New Albany, Indiana, were called and found him in a garage. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rondale Moore,” the Vikings said in a statement. “As we work to understand the facts, we have spoken with Rondale’s family to express our condolences and the full support of the Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings added: “We have also been in communication with players, coaches and staff and will provide counseling and emotional support resources to anyone in need. Our hearts go out to Rodale’s family and friends during this devastating time.”
Investigators said Moore was found in the garage with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey said the investigation is ongoing, WLKY reported.
