Puri, 42, currently serves as the Michigan House Democratic Leader and has already broken barriers in the state’s political history. He became the first Sikh-American elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2020 and was later chosen by colleagues to lead the Democratic caucus.

Michigan currently has a Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, but Republicans control the state House, with Matt Hall serving as Speaker. Democrats are hoping to win enough seats in the upcoming election to take control of the 110-member chamber and potentially elevate Puri to the top leadership position.

“Michigan Dems are on the move. We are about to flip the state house and make Ranjeev Puri THE FIRST Indian American State House Speaker in the country,” Representative Haley Stevens said while campaigning for Democrats in the state.

Puri is running against Republican candidate Allison Kay Fuller in the November election.
