President Murmu nominates Harivansh Narayan Singh as Member of Parliament

New Delhi: In a major development in the Upper House, President Drupadi Murmu has nominated Harivansh Narayan Singh Appointed as a member of the Union House to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.The nomination was made under Section 80(1)(a) of the Constitution in recognition of Harivansh’s contribution to journalism and social services. His new term will last until 2032, ensuring that he continues to play a role in the functioning of Parliament.An official notification from the Government of India said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 80(1)(a) of the Constitution of India, read with Clause (3) of the same, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Harivansh to the Council of State to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of one of the nominated members.”The move comes immediately after his second term as a JD(U) member in Bihar ended on Thursday. Although his party did not renominate him through the state assembly, the presidential nomination allowed the veteran leader to remain in the House uninterrupted.Harivansh has served as Deputy Chairman of the House of Federation since 2018 and is considered an experienced parliamentary figure. Observers believe the 69-year-old’s re-entry will help maintain continuity in House operations during an active legislative period.Before entering politics, Harivansh had a long career in journalism and social services, which paved the way for his nomination to the House of Lords.
