New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the power of organ donation in the 131st episode of his monthly radio show Mann Ki Baat, sharing the story of a one-year-old girl from Kerala, whose parents chose to donate her organs after her death.“There is nothing sadder than a parent losing a child,” he said, referring to Arin Sherin Abraham. He spoke of the unimaginable sadness of losing a child so young, with her whole life ahead of her. However, in the midst of this pain, her parents Arun Abraham and Sherin decided to donate their daughter’s organs – a decision he called an act of immense courage and humanity.
Prime Minister Modi said their choice showed strength and compassion in the face of personal tragedy. He noted that Alynn may no longer be among us, but her name has been added to the list of the youngest organ donors in the country.Talking about the wider outlook, he said awareness about organ donation in India was steadily increasing to help needy patients while also strengthening medical research. He cited examples of transplant recipients who went on to lead active lives.Lakshmi Devi from Delhi completed the 14-km trek to Kedarnath after undergoing a heart transplant. Before receiving the donated organ, her heart function was only 15%. Gaurang Banerjee from West Bengal visited Nathula twice, at an altitude of 14,000 feet, after undergoing a lung transplant. In Rajasthan, Ramdev Singh from Sikar received a kidney transplant and is now active in sports.“These are inspiring examples of how one noble decision can change many lives,” the Prime Minister said, urging citizens to consider organ donation as a collective responsibility.This appeal is framed by stories of loss and rebirth, reinforcing a simple message: one decision can give someone a second chance at life.
