PM Modi becomes first world leader to reach 100 million Instagram followers

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday became the first world leader and politician to have over 100 million followers on Instagram, marking a new milestone in his global digital influence.Prime Minister Modi joined the Meta-owned platform in 2014 and now has more than double the number of followers as US President Donald Trump, who is in second place with 43.2 million followers. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto follows with 15 million, while Brazil’s president has 14.4 million. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has 11.6 million followers, and Argentinian President Javier Milei has 6.4 million followers. The total number of followers of these five leaders is still lower than Modi’s personal number.

Domestically, the gap between Modi and other political leaders is also wide. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has 16.1 million followers, while Rahul Gandhi, a Congress lawmaker and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has about 12.6 million followers.Separately, surveys show Prime Minister Modi leading global approval ratings among selected world leaders. According to Statista, as of December 2025, Prime Minister Modi’s approval rating reached 70%, ranking first. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi came in second with an approval rating of 63%, followed by Argentine Prime Minister Javier Milei with an approval rating of 60%. U.S. President Donald Trump ranked 11th with 43% approval rating.The latest data released by Morning Consult, a US business intelligence company, shows that based on a survey conducted from February 2 to 8, 2026, Modi ranked first with an approval rating of 67%. Andrej Babis of the Czech Republic came in second with 59%. Takaichi Sanae ranked fifth with 56%, and Trump ranked 11th with 40%.Morning Consult’s 2025 data also puts Modi at the top of the “democratic leader approval rating” with a score of 75%, followed by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung with a score of 59%. Trump ranked eighth with an approval rating of less than 45%.
