The sound of the plane’s engine grew louder before the plane crashed into a truck near Newark Airport, leaving the truck driver confused.
Chilling dashcam video reveals the exact moment a United Airlines flight crashed into a streetlight and a tractor-trailer on a nearby highway while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in a freak accident on Sunday. A Boeing 767 was carrying more than 200 passengers and 10 crew members from Venice, Italy, to Newark. The truck driver was injured, but it was not life-threatening. The plane landed normally and no one was injured.CNN reported that a preliminary investigation blamed the crash on the landing gear and tires on the underside of the plane, as the plane first collided with a pole and a tractor-trailer. The pole then struck a Jeep.“The tractor-trailer driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital,” New Jersey State Police spokesman SFC Charles Marchan said in a statement.Chuck Paterakis, senior vice president of transportation for Schmidt Bakery and a partner at H&S Family of Bakeries, told CNN that the truck driver, Warren Boardley of Baltimore, was transporting bakery products north on the turnpike to a Newark Airport warehouse when the crash occurred.Dashcam video from the truck shows Bodley singing just seconds before the plane’s landing gear tires hit the truck. As the sound of the plane’s engines grew louder, the driver became confused. The next moment, only shards of glass were left flying.According to CNN, the pilot and air traffic control did not appear to realize that the plane hit a light pole as it landed, according to air traffic control communications captured by LiveATC.net. While other aircraft continued to land on the same runway, the 767 was instructed to taxi to the gate. About half an hour after landing, air traffic controllers reported “a hole in the side of the aircraft” to an operational vehicle preparing to inspect the runway, according to another recording from LiveATC.net.“The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate normally, and no passengers or crew were injured,” United said, adding that the flight crew had been suspended as part of the investigation.
