Peter Hungary Defeated a pro-Trump prime minister on Sunday Viktor Orban A historic feat in the Hungarian elections. The 45-year-old pro-European, conservative liberal leader will be sworn in next week. Orban, who lost power after 16 years, admitted defeat, saying: “I congratulate the winning party. We will serve the Hungarian state and our homeland against the opposition.”

For Orban, the loss is a major blow. The 62-year-old has won the support of President Donald Trump and some of Europe’s top conservatives. It is unclear whether Magyar’s Tisza party can secure a two-thirds majority in parliament to govern without a coalition government. With 77% of the votes counted, Orban’s ruling party Fidesz has an approval rating of over 53% and an approval rating of 38%.
Magyar himself is a loyal supporter of Orban. In February 2024, he severed ties with Fidesz leaders over a scandal involving the president’s pardon of a man convicted of covering up child sex abuse. The controversy led to the resignations of President Katalin Novak and Magyar’s ex-wife, Justice Minister Judit Varga. Mazar accused the government of “hiding behind women’s skirts” and sacrificing them to protect the regime.
The focus now turns to Magyar’s question of balancing relations between Europe and the United States. While the EU member and lawyer has not spoken publicly about his relationship with Trump, he has tweeted about the US president’s network on several occasions.

Peter Magyar’s post on Trump
As early as November 2025, Magyar praised Trump and criticized Orban’s policies.
“What is the difference between Donald Trump @POTUS and Viktor Orban? Donald Trump has never been afraid to stand up and have an open, direct debate with his political opponents. @PM_ViktorOrban has not dared to do so for 20 years. Donald Trump has never been afraid to do so. Come not to represent foreign interests. Viktor Orbán has been doing this for a long time. Every decision Donald Trump makes serves the interests of American companies. For Viktor Orbán, only his oligarchs” he posted on the X (formerly Twitter) platform.
“You can love him or hate him, but Trump is a natural leader. Viktor Orbán is a copy ordered from Temu and he tries to imitate the original,” he added.
In 2024, Tisza leaders congratulated Trump on winning the election over Kamiles Harris.
“The United States has decided. Congratulations to President Donald Trump, and to the newly elected members of the House and Senate! The United States of America is one of our country’s most important allies and economic partners. The TISZA Party is ready to work with the new U.S. administration to further develop the relationship between our two countries.”
Trump has yet to comment on Sunday’s defeat of his key ally Orban.
