New Delhi: Left party leaders approached Congress on Tuesday Supreme Court seek to target chief minister of assam Himanta Biswa Sarma A now-deleted video that allegedly depicted violence against Muslims. After senior advocate Nizam Pasha, appearing for CPI and CPM leaders, sought urgent intervention, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and NV Anjaria took note of the plea.Pasha told the court that the petitioner had lodged a complaint regarding the video but no FIR has been registered so far.“We seek urgent intervention from the court against the disturbing statements made by the sitting chief minister of Assam, including the recent release of a video in which he was seen firing at members of a particular community. A complaint has been filed but no FIR has been registered,” the lawyer said.Responding to the plea, the CJI said such petitions tend to coincide with the election season.“The problem is, once the election comes, part of it will be in the Supreme Court. That’s the question. We’ll find out and give a date,” he said. The controversy is related to a video shared by the official X account of the Assam BJP on February 7. The video purportedly shows Salma aiming his rifle and firing at two people – one wearing a toque and the other with a beard – with the caption “shooting at close range”.The post sparked widespread backlash and accusations of inciting hatred in the community. Following the uproar, the BJP deleted the video from its social media accounts. When asked about the incident, Salma denied any knowledge of the video.“I don’t know anything about any video,” the chief minister said when asked by reporters. The Supreme Court is expected to decide a date to hear the case in the coming days.
