LAHORE: Two Pakistani academics chronicling the life and contributions of Bhai Ram Singh, one of India’s most eminent architects of the 19th century, described him on Wednesday as “a key figure in the cultural and architectural history of Punjab”.
Professors Pervaiz Vandal and Sajida Vandal launched the ‘Amritsar Special Edition’ of their book ‘The Raj, Lahore and Bhai Ram Singh’.
This edition traces the extraordinary journey of Bhai Ram Singh, whose work bridges indigenous design traditions and colonial influences. The pair said his contributions to architecture, education and craftsmanship remain central to understanding the region’s shared cultural heritage.
“Bhairam Singh’s legacy has shaped important institutions and architectural landmarks, particularly in Lahore, making him a key figure in the cultural and architectural history of Punjab,” Sajida Wandal said in a statement.
She said the inauguration ceremony of the Amritsar edition of Lahore, Lahore and Bairam Singh will be held in Amritsar on Wednesday.
“Bhairam Singh’s work represents a marriage of tradition and innovation that transcends the boundaries of the present. Revisiting his legacy is crucial to reconnecting with a shared cultural past that continues to shape our identity,” said Wandal, retired principal of the National College of Arts, Lahore.
She said the book truly showcases the creative legacy of Bhai Ram Singh and those who love Lahore should read the book as it is also the story of Lahore’s golden past. She emphasized that this book is a must-read for students of history, architects, and design.
Bhai Ram Singh was a pioneer architect and master craftsman in British India whose masterpieces defined the Indo-Saracenic style of Lahore and Punjab.
Bhai Ram Singh was born into the Ramgarhia family in eastern Punjab. Vandal said he carried on the family legacy and proved his talent at an early age.
In 1873, he shocked everyone by repairing the broken legs of a piano to the wife of the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, to her great satisfaction.
This event brought Bhai Ram Singh to Lahore, where he formed a creative partnership with John Lockwood Kipling.
She added that Bhai Ram Singh competed with British engineers, architects and gained recognition for his innovative patterns and designs.
