According to Fox News, Gorman, a freshman at Loyola University in Chicago, was shot and killed with friends in the early hours of March 19 near a pier in the city’s Rogers Park neighborhood. Police said 25-year-old Venezuelan national Jose Medina-Medina was shot and killed.

Family says ‘meaningless’ label inadequate

In a detailed statement, Gorman’s family pushed back on comments from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, both of whom described the killing as a tragedy.

“What happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to a ‘senseless tragedy,'” the family said, stressing that she was “doing something completely normal” and “should be here.”

They added that calling the incident “senseless” was “not enough” and called for “a clear and honest account of what went wrong”.

The family further said they would not allow her life to be reduced to “a talking point or a generalization”, urging leaders to face the “brutal truth” to ensure it never happens again.

Case details and arrests

Authorities said Medina-Medina was previously arrested by U.S. Border Patrol in May 2023 and later released back home, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The suspect was identified using surveillance video and law enforcement databases.

Police noted that video after the shooting showed him wearing dark clothing and a mask, with a “noticeable limp and gait” that helped investigators track him.

He was later arrested at his Rogers Park apartment.

Leadership response

The case sparked repeated political debate. Governor Pritzker acknowledged the “real failure” but said the blame was not limited to Illinois and pointed to national issues such as the lack of comprehensive immigration reform.

Mayor Johnson described the incident as “senseless violence” while also criticizing federal leadership, arguing that illegal weapons trafficking and broader policy gaps enable such crimes.

The White House defended Donald Trumpimmigration policy, saying the administration has “secured the border” and deported “dangerous illegal aliens” while accusing critics of undermining public safety.

Amid the political debate, Gorman’s family urged leaders to put responsibility first and not pass the buck. “Our Daughters is not a policy debate,” they said. “She was a life taken and needs to be held accountable.”
