In response, Seoul convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council and urged Pyongyang to stop actions that violate U.N. According to Bloomberg, the launch came shortly after an unusual exchange between North and South Korea. North Korea earlier conveyed Kim Jong Un’s praise for Lee Myung-bak’s apology for flying a drone into North Korean airspace. Seoul called the communication a “meaningful step forward” for peaceful coexistence.Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong, said in a statement that the North Korean leader viewed Lee Myung-bak’s apology as a sign of a “frank and broad-minded” approach. However, Pyongyang later dismissed Seoul’s explanation, calling it a “hopeful dream reading”.A senior North Korean official stressed that the message was intended to send a warning and claimed that South Korea remained an “enemy state” regardless of its actions or words. The latest launch also follows a projectile launched a day earlier that may have been a failed weapons test. According to Yonhap News Agency, the missile showed signs of malfunction shortly after launch and disappeared mid-flight. Earlier on Wednesday, the short-range missile flew about 240 kilometers. The back-to-back launches underscore the challenges Lee Myung-bak’s government faces as it seeks to ease tensions with nuclear-armed North Korea.Analysts say Pyongyang is trying to counter Seoul’s diplomatic narrative while strengthening its position of power on the Korean peninsula while continuing to push for international recognition of its status as a nuclear power.
