What Nick Bilton told Scott Pelley

The letter refers to Paley’s decision to question and criticize Bilton at a staff meeting on Monday morning, June 1. According to CNN, Pelley’s harsh remarks were leaked to outside news outlets, sparking a crisis within CBS.

To justify firing Paley, Bilton wrote to Paley, “You hijacked my first meeting with employees and disparaged me, my qualifications, and my intentions in an extremely disrespectful and contemptuous manner.”

Bilton went on to call it “a display of hostility in front of the staff” that “demonstrates that you have no interest in contributing to the future success of the show or approaching my new term with an open mind for collaboration and progress.”

“Despite yesterday’s inappropriate behavior,” Bilton continued, “I am hopeful that when we sit down with you today we can collectively find a path forward. You made it clear that you are not interested in that path.”

On Tuesday night, Bilton wrote to the “60 Minutes” staff about Paley’s exit, “I know what Scott means to many of you, and I don’t say this lightly. I made multiple attempts over the weekend to have a direct conversation with him, and this afternoon I tried to find common ground. That is not the path Scott has chosen.”

Bilton then tried to turn staff’s attention back to the future of 60 Minutes, saying: “I realize this is a huge change in a very short period of time and I’m not going to pretend otherwise.”

“I will never speak to you again about last week,” Bilton wrote. “What I will commit to is this: my unwavering support for each of you, the journalism you do, and what we will do together in the future.”

What did Scott Pelley do before he was fired?

At a meeting Monday, Paley accused the editor-in-chief of Barry Weiss tried to “kill” the news magazine and objected to her hiring Bilton, a former technology reporter with little TV news experience, to run the show. He reportedly refused to meet privately with Bilton and Weiss to discuss last Thursday’s shakeup of “60 Minutes” that included firing top producers and two reporters. Bilton was appointed the same day.

Paley called Weis and Bilton unfit for their jobs during a staff meeting on Monday. He even said Bilton “will never be welcome here,” according to CNN.

“She’s not qualified for the job,” Paley said of Weiss, sources said, according to the New York Post. “The changes she’s made to The Nightly News have been disastrous, so why should we expect this to get better?”

The meeting ended without any clear resolution on the way forward. Sources told the New York Post that Bilton abruptly ended the meeting after a heated exchange with Paley.

Paley said in a statement after his firing that “60 Minutes” had “lost its DNA” as a result of last week’s firings.

“Good people are being silenced because they stand up for our viewers,” Paley wrote. “They stand for fairness against political bias; they stand for professionalism against chaos.”
