New York horror: Frustrated father kills 16-month-old son by slamming him into crib: ‘His spine was shattered’

Matthew Nuttall pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree manslaughter in the death of Isaac Benton of Jamestown, the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office announced. Police launched an investigation into the 27-year-old father on April 15, 2024, two days after officers received reports of a suspicious death at a Jamestown home. Investigators determined Isaac died from blunt force trauma.

Matthew Nuttall frustrated by son’s crying

Nuttall became frustrated with his son’s cries and threw him into a portable crib, causing fatal injuries to the child’s spine, The Washington Post reported.

While reporting the latest status of the case, district attorney “These are the cases that have affected me the most,” said Jason Schmidt. “Isaac was just 16 months old and he hit a Pack ‘n Play so hard during the autopsy that his spine shattered.”

Investigation into the death of Isaac Benton

Captain Daniel Overend of the Jamestown Police Department stated that the Jamestown Police Department’s Investigation Section conducted a thorough and efficient investigation into this incident, which resulted in the arrest of Matthew E. Nuttall on a charge of first-degree manslaughter.

First-degree manslaughter is classified as a Class B violent felony in New York State, punishable by a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Nuttall is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. However, he unexpectedly pleaded guilty during a pretrial conference last week, according to the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office.

Nutall will be sentenced on April 20.

The toddler was born on December 6, 2022, in Buffalo. The funeral will be held on April 19 at Trinity Church, Frewsburg.
