The New Jersey Devils are entering a period of uncertainty with the departure of general manager Tom Fitzgerald, a move that creates uncertainty about the future of the club and head coach Sheldon Keefe. Fitzgerald was reportedly relieved of his duties after nearly six seasons at the helm. With the Devils struggling to live up to expectations and potentially missing the playoffs this year, the decision marks a major shift in leadership for the team, which now faces a critical offseason as it looks to re-establish itself as a contender next season. according to National Hockey LeagueIn 77 games, the Devils had a record of 40 wins, 34 draws and 3 losses, scoring 83 points. However, attention quickly turned to the team’s head coach Keefe, whose position seemed increasingly uncertain.

New Jersey Devils face uncertainty, general manager Tom Fitzgerald’s exit puts Keefe’s future in question

With the front office currently vacant, attention quickly turns to New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon KeefeWith Fitzgerald being relieved of his duties after nearly six seasons coaching the New Jersey Devils, his position appears increasingly uncertain. Announcing the general manager’s exit, the team said on X/Twitter: “New Jersey Devils Managing Partner David Blitzer announced today that Tom Fitzgerald will be leaving the organization.”According to reports, a general manager change often results in a broader organizational reorganization, and incoming leadership is often more willing to appoint a new coaching staff. With this year’s disappointing season, it raises the question of whether Keefe will stay on the bench or move on like Fitzgerald.Speaking about the situation, head coach Keefe said: “It doesn’t feel good to hear the news. To be honest, I didn’t feel good today. He further added, “I certainly want to be part of the solution here. Obviously, they’ve made some decisions about who the new general manager is and the leadership of the team. … I’m going to be part of the discussion and the evaluation. I don’t feel good about the situation where we put the team here.“Keefe reportedly coached the Devils to the playoffs a year ago, bowing out five games into the first round, while Hughes is out for the season due to shoulder surgery. However, it should be noted that in the league’s seven seasons, this is the first time in the spring that Keefe has not led anyone to the playoffs. The Devils’ inconsistent performance and failure to secure a playoff berth led to a drastic organizational restructuring by the front office. Additionally, the team’s season has been complicated by injuries and poor performance, highlighting structural issues that may require bigger changes to become stronger next season.
