Nancy Guthrie was reported missing by her family on February 1 and has not been found. Authorities believe the 84-year-old was taken from his home the night before. The search for Nancy has been going on for more than three months. In the meantime, retired Colorado detective Lisa Miller shared a theory of what might have happened. Nancy Guthrie.
The former law enforcement official said she received FBI training in hostage negotiation and shared her insights on the case fox news. Miller shared a chilling “wrench attack” theory that she drew from European crime and used it to explain the actions of the masked man seen on camera. While there are no suspects in the Nancy Guthrie case, the FBI has released video of a masked man wearing gloves who is believed to have been at Nancy’s door the night she was taken from her home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona.
Followers of the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping case often refer to the masked suspect as “the Porch Guy.” Miller talks about possible suspects, modus operandi and what may have happened to Nancy Guthrie.
Miller explained that the “wrench attack” theory came from a 2009 comic book about hackers. Miller recalled hackers trying to get into systems to gain access to cryptocurrencies or “bad” stuff from comics.
She then dropped the line that would go on to shape similar crimes in the real world. “We would drug him and beat him with a $5 wrench until we got the code,” Miller recalled.

The former detective went on to explain that wrench attacks come from the brains of criminals sitting behind computers. Miller explained that these individuals scour the web and social media platforms to identify those who may possess cryptocurrency. They would then hire street thugs to enter the houses and “beat the guys” so they would hand over their passwords to gain entry. “The mastermind then guides street criminals on how to obtain the money,” Miller continued. She pointed out that this kind of situation happens frequently in Europe, including family members being kidnapped and fingers being chopped off.
Miller then pointed out Savannah GuthrieShe appealed to her kidnappers in a video message in which she was seen with siblings Camren and Anne. The “Today” host repeatedly begged for their mother’s return. The former law enforcement official noted that some of the language Savannah used was learned by hostage negotiators. The former cop added that this could mean the FBI took the first ransom note seriously.
She added that the FBI wouldn’t put them through the trauma of recording a video unless they didn’t believe there was “something real” there. Miller, who noted that no arrests have been made in the Guthrie case, said the perpetrator was likely sitting somewhere behind a computer screen. She suggested they might be in another country and could use apps like Signal to hire muscle, i.e. street criminals.
Miller further stated that the actions of the masked man were amateurish to her. She pointed to the way the man was dressed and carried his gun, describing him as “a bit silly.” Miller returned to the “wrench attack” theory by focusing on the “simple” approach of the masked man and the “complicating factors” in the kidnapping.
At this point, Miller also noted that Savannah was a well-known character and that her mother had appeared on television. The former detective speculated they may have discussed wealth on social media. If not, she still points out that Savannah is quite wealthy and someone might decide to take advantage of that and target Nancy Guthrie.
Miller concluded that she believed the “mastermind” would take steps to protect himself, but she did not believe the man was invincible. She also expressed hope that someone would come forward, which could lead to a break in Guthrie’s case.
