Pima County Sheriff’s Department was a lead in the case, the FBI was assisting, and one of the main findings was that there was blood on the Guthrie’s porch. Now, a retired FBI agent says the blood pattern suggests Guthrie struggled with his captors.

At this point, the former FBI agent shared his expert opinion, saying “I believe she was threatened – she was most likely controlled by a gun that was in the offender’s waist or crotch.” He added, “He threatened her with a gun, controlled her, and led her to the front door. It was then or shortly thereafter that she realized he was trying to get her out of the house.”

The former law enforcement official went on to explain that it’s never a good sign if a perpetrator wants to remove a victim from a location. This is because this almost always means they will take the victim to a place where the attacker has more control and privacy.

The former FBI agent continued, “I believe Nancy was fighting with him either inside the door or outside the door, depending on where the blood evidence first appeared,” adding, “At that point, she was probably hit with overwhelming force, punched in the face or nose, and then she started bleeding. She fell down, either on her knees or just bent over. And then she coughed up that blood, and that’s why we see that pattern.”

Clement continued, “I think at that point, she was most likely picked up by the offender. He or she stepped in and smeared, or another part of her body came into contact with the blood that she had coughed up, and smeared the pattern that we see here.” He added, “From that point on, she was taken to whatever vehicle he had. At that point, she likely turned her face up so that we wouldn’t see more blood dripping from the facial wounds that could have caused this pattern.”
