Misri, Rubio discuss trade, Quad; US diplomats to visit India in May

Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit New Delhi next month after having a “productive meeting” with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on a range of issues including trade and Quad talks.

Misri is on a three-day visit to the White House, where he met with Rubio. The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations, particularly trade, critical minerals, defence, and the Quad.

“Welcome to the White House @VikramMisri! A productive meeting with @SecRubio that focused on our bilateral relations, specifically trade, critical minerals, defense and the Quad,” US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who attended the meeting, posted on X.

Gore said Secretary Rubio looked forward to visiting India next month.

Previously, Misri held talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Alison Hook.

“Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Washington today. The two leaders reaffirmed the close partnership between their countries and shared news on the situation in the Persian Gulf and other global and regional priorities,” Tommy Piggott, principal deputy spokesman for the U.S. State Department, said in a statement.

Hook said she and Misri discussed how India and the United States could work more closely together on security, defense and economics.

“We are looking for practical ways to make Americans and Indians safer and more prosperous, including through the Quad,” she said.

The Indian Embassy in the United States said that Hook and Misri reviewed the bilateral agenda between India and the United States since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs consultations in December last year.

The two diplomats also exchanged assessments on recent developments in West Asia and regional issues of common concern.

US Vice President Vance led a delegation to Islamabad for talks with Iranian leaders after the warring sides agreed to a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan.
