‘Minority anxiety’: Shashi Tharoor questions FCRA amendments

New Delhi: Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor Questioning reports that the Center may withdraw the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, said the move cannot be fully trusted.Speaking in Nilambur recently, Tharoor said, “The Centre’s reports of withdrawal of the Fair Credit Act amendment bill cannot be fully believed. The urgency with which the central government is trying to amend the FCRA is incomprehensible. The bill is likely to be re-introduced when Parliament reconvenes on the 16th. “He added that the opposition would remain vigilant, saying, “The opposition will not allow any amendment to be passed that creates anxiety among religious minorities.”His remarks came a day after opposition lawmakers staged a protest in Parliament, Makadua, demanding the withdrawal of the Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Amendment Bill 2026. They said the proposed changes could create uncertainty and anxiety for NGOs and religious minorities.On March 25, the Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Amendment Bill 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha. Although the bill was included in the Lok Sabha agenda for consideration on Wednesday, it was not discussed.It seeks to amend the Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act, 2010. The government says it aims to increase transparency and accountability on foreign funds received by India.
