Mexico said on Saturday that two U.S. agents died during an operation to dismantle a suspected drug laboratory in Mexico and that they did not have permission to conduct such an operation. An April 19 incident in the northern state of Chihuahua that killed two Mexican officials sparked new diplomatic friction between the United States and Mexico and put pressure on President Claudia Shinbaum.Mexico’s Security Ministry said in a statement that immigration records showed one of the two agents entered the country as a “visitor” and the other used a “diplomatic passport.” “Neither is formally certified to engage in business activities within the national territory.”Multiple American media reported that the two unidentified Americans worked for the CIA. The U.S. ambassador to Mexico said they were employees of the U.S. embassy. The Ministry of Security statement pointed out that Mexican law prohibits foreign agents from participating in operations in Mexico.
