The state accused Meta of violating Tennessee’s consumer protection laws by knowingly creating a product that forced teenagers to compulsively use social media. According to the attorney general’s lawsuit, Tennessee also claims Meta misled the public by saying Instagram was safe while hiding its own research on possible harm to teenagers. The lawsuit was filed by the office of Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Schemetti, Reuters reported.

The state said Meta’s internal research showed Instagram could have a negative impact on teen mental health but did not tell users about the findings. Tennessee alleges that Meta continued to offer features it already knew could be harmful to young users without issuing appropriate warnings.

Instagram features are getting a lot of attention

Tennessean says several features of Instagram encourage teens to continue using the app over the long term. These features include autoplaying videos, Instagram Reels, frequent notifications, and disappearing content, which can put a strain on checking apps quickly.

Yuan defends himself

Meta rejected the accusations and said the company already has safety tools designed to protect teenagers, according to a company spokesperson. The company says it has spent about 10 years building age-appropriate safety settings and tools to help parents control their children’s use of social media. Meta says it wants teens to use social media in a protected environment with built-in safeguards.

Meta also argued that the claims were primarily about content posted by users rather than Instagram’s design itself, Reuters reported. The company said Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects online platforms from legal liability for user-created content.

How the Tennessee trial will proceed

Jury selection is set to begin Monday in Nashville. In the first phase, a jury will decide whether Meta violated Tennessee’s consumer protection laws. According to Reuters, if the jury rules against Meta, the case will enter the second phase, where the judge will decide financial penalties and whether Instagram must change some of its features. Tennessee law allows for fines of up to $1,000 per violation, Reuters reported. The entire trial is expected to last about seven weeks.

Meta faces more lawsuits in U.S.

The Tennessee case is one of several major trials Meta faces over similar accusations that its social media platform intentionally engineered addiction. almost every US state Legal claims have been filed against Meta over the alleged impact of its platform on children and teenagers. Another major trial is scheduled to begin on August 18 in California, where 29 states have accused Meta of violating the federal Children’s Data Protection Act, as well as other state laws.

California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey also filed additional state claims against Meta in the case. Meta also faces thousands of lawsuits filed in state and federal courts by individuals and school districts over similar claims.

Another trial against Meta and Snapchat parent Snap Inc is scheduled to begin on July 27. According to Reuters, the lawsuit was filed by RKC, a 15-year-old boy from Florida, who claimed that social media had damaged his mental health. Meta and Snap have denied the accusations, saying they are committed to protecting children and are not responsible for content posted by users.

What happened in another state?

The Tennessee case is the second state trial against Mehta on these charges. Meta was tried earlier this year in New Mexico on similar charges. A New Mexico jury found that Meta misled consumers about the safety of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. According to Reuters, the jury awarded New Mexico $375 million in damages. A judge is still deciding whether Meta should make changes to its platform and pay additional damages in the New Mexico case.
