Maris Nichols: Douglasville teacher faces 27 sex crime charges; 5 things to know after court appearance
A Douglasville high school teacher made her first court appearance Thursday morning as she faces more than two dozen sex crime charges involving multiple students.
Maris Nichols, formerly an educator Alexander Hay was indicted by a grand jury this week on 27 counts as part of the ongoing investigation. Here are five things to know about her case.
Maris Nichols appears in court for first time
Her first appearance before a magistrate on Thursday morning was largely procedural. Such proceedings require defendants to be informed of their rights and the charges against them laid out. While bond discussions may occur, they are not guaranteed in all cases, including this one.
Her case has been transferred to Superior Court, and her lawyer said a motion hearing is scheduled for Monday, where the issue of bail may be resolved. Additionally, attorneys chose to waive the reading of the charges.

indictment Nichols Earlier this week, significant progress was made in a case that began in May with two charges. The case was later expanded into a full criminal case, including charges of sexual contact with a student, grooming, child molestation, sexual exploitation of a child, furnishing obscene material to a minor and attempted tampering with evidence.
The grand jury indictment was released June 24 in Douglas Superior Court county.
Charges against Maris Nichols
Additionally, an arrest warrant was issued to a grand jury on Wednesday. Douglas County Jail records indicate she was taken into custody the same day.
Nichols now faces the following charges:
Eight counts of first-degree sexual contact by employee or agent
Five counts of sexual exploitation of a child
three counts of first-degree child abuse
Three counts of abduction of minors
Four counts of electronically providing obscene material to a minor
One count of child molestation
one count of criminal attempt to tamper with evidence
Two counts of criminal attempt to engage in sexual contact by an employee or agent in the first degree
Of the 27 charges, only three were classified as misdemeanors.

The indictment alleges that Nichols was employed at Alexander High School when she engaged in sexual contact or sexually explicit conduct with students attending the school.
Multiple allegations allege the conduct occurred between January and May 2026, while others focus on specific dates in late April and early May.
The sexual exploitation charges allege that Nichols helped create videos showing minors engaging in sexually explicit activity.
The grooming charge alleges that Nichols used in-person interactions, electronic devices, computers, social media and text messages to contact minors, ensure their compliance, prepare them, persuade them, induce them or force them to participate in sex crimes.
The count related to the electronic transmission of obscene material charges Nichols with transmitting to a minor images or visual representations that prosecutors believe depict explicit nudity or sexual conduct and are harmful to the minor.
The child molestation charge alleges that Nichols engaged in immoral and indecent conduct with a child under the age of 16 by engaging in sexually explicit conduct and providing sexually explicit material.
The last two charges allege that Nichols, acting as an employee or agent, attempted to engage in sexual contact by sending messages to students, distributing nude photos and soliciting sexual conduct.
The indictment significantly expands the scope of formal criminal proceedings against Nichols.
Nichols was originally arrested on May 8 on two counts of inappropriate sexual contact as an employee or agent. At the time, she was released on $40,000 bail under strict conditions.
The conditions require her to distance herself from the identified victim, the victim’s home and the victim’s family. In addition, she was instructed to avoid Alexander High School, have no contact with minor children who are not biological relatives, undergo a mental health evaluation, wear an electronic monitoring device and be placed on house arrest except for approved activities.
After her initial arrest, investigators continued to review the case.
Maris Nichols arrested
Nichols was arrested again on May 20 after additional warrants were obtained. At the time, prosecutors said investigators uncovered more alleged criminal activity.
On May 21, a second judge granted Nichols an additional $74,000 bail and required her to comply with all previous bail conditions. The new restrictions include a ban on any direct or indirect communication with the victim, restrictions on her 6-year-old daughter’s contact with minors, a ban on internet access including social media platforms, and a mandatory psychosexual evaluation.
The latest indictment comes as Nichols is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on June 29.
