Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, spent the week ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations at an Islamic spiritual retreat in Spain, the New York Post exclusively reports. The Syrian-American artist and illustrator reportedly showed up at Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday before boarding a flight to Palma de Mallorca. The trip drew attention because it took place just days before Fourth of July events. While Duvaj attended an overseas retreat, Mamdani stayed in New York to attend official city events related to the United States’ Bi50th anniversary celebrations.

According to the New York Post, Wexler’s publicist said the photos were taken by a friend who was on the same flight as Duvaj.

Duvaji’s trip became a political topic. Some republican City officials criticized her decision to travel abroad during the anniversary celebrations.
Queens Councilwoman Joann Ariola told the New York Post: “Nothing says ‘America 250’ more than not participating in the Mediterranean vacation celebrations, but I’m not surprised because her hatred of America is so obvious.”
Staten Island Assemblyman Frank Morano also said: “It is disappointing that the First Lady chose to travel abroad rather than participate in one of the largest civic events our city and country will commemorate this year.”
