The selection of Ravi as the 24th Governor of Bengal on the eve of the elections also prompted the Chief Minister to claim that “such behavior destroys the spirit of the Indian Constitution and strikes at the very foundation of our federal structure”. Ravi, known for his confrontation with Stalin’s government, will enter Raj Bhavan ahead of the assembly elections. As many have pointed out, Bose has kept an uncharacteristically low profile over the past few months, avoiding any new fights with the Bangladesh government. Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said, “They (TMC) should stop complaining about ethics and morals in a state where the leader of the opposition in the assembly has to move 124 motions in the high court just to hold a public meeting.” Raj Bhavan insiders gave several “reasons” for Bose’s decision: poor health and frustration that the state government was not allowing him to work. It is also becoming increasingly clear to Bengali political circles that Bose’s recent non-confrontational approach is not entirely to the liking of local BJP brass. “It is not the national government that is holding him back, but his own actions and inactions,” a top BJP official told TOI.
