London CBI team handles final formalities in Nirav Modi case

New Delhi: A team of CBI officials and legal experts is learned to have arrived in London to handle final formalities in the Nirav Modi case. The team has traveled there to hold discussions with lawyers as the fugitive diamantaire has exhausted all legal options in the UK, sources said.The move came after he reopened proceedings for an extradition order against him in the UK courts, which were dismissed by the King’s Bench of London’s High Court.The team will also discuss a petition he filed in France seeking help from the European Court of Human Rights, which has marked the case as confidential, sources said. The hearing in Strasbourg is likely to be held in mid-April in the presence of the Indian side.Developments suggest his extradition from a British prison is imminent. In late March, Crown Prosecution Service advocates, assisted by a CBI task force, including investigating officers who traveled to London for hearings, vigorously argued the application for a retrial.The High Court held that the rehearing of the petition and the circumstances surrounding it were not exceptional and therefore a rehearing was appropriate.CBI has been seeking Nirav’s extradition NAB scam A total of Rs 6,400 crore. After his arrest in the UK in 2019, the court granted his extradition and dismissed an earlier appeal.
