Lindsay Clancy murder case: Lawyer asks Trump to pardon Massachusetts mother after mistrial

The lawyer representing Lindsay Clancy, whose trial over the deaths of her three children ended without a verdict, has asked President Donald Trump to pardon her despite the case being prosecuted under Massachusetts state law.Attorney Kevin Reddington made the appeal during an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America on Tuesday, urging Trump to consider Clancy’s circumstances and her mental state.“Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady, the type of person she is and what she’s been through, and consider a pardon,” Reddington said.Clancy, 36, was accused of killing her three children at their home in January 2023. Her defence argued that she was not criminally responsible because she had suffered postpartum psychosis and was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the killings.Prosecutors disputed that account and argued that the killings were premeditated.The case ended in a mistrial last week after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict. The state could still pursue a retrial.Trump had previously commented on the case after the mistrial was declared, saying Clancy had done “a horrible, horrible thing” but suggesting that her eventual punishment could involve imprisonment or treatment in a mental institution.The president’s constitutional pardon authority generally covers federal offences, while Clancy’s prosecution was brought under Massachusetts law. Trump’s office was asked about Reddington’s request on Tuesday and referred to the president’s earlier remarks.Trump has previously used clemency in a case prosecuted under state law. In December, he pardoned former Colorado county clerk Tina Peters, a political ally who had been convicted of state charges linked to voting machine tampering, according to Reuters.The pardon did not directly release Peters from her state sentence, but it increased pressure on Colorado Governor Jared Polis, who later granted her clemency in May. Peters subsequently appeared alongside Trump in the Oval Office.
